If you read my reviews of the Halo Collar 3 and 4, you already know Freya, my Pharaoh Hound with a prey drive so strong she could probably chase a leaf across state lines. Chipmunks remain her mortal enemies, and she has no shortage of determination when it comes to proving it.

Let’s start with what’s changed in the new upgraded Halo Collar 5. Then we’ll touch on some of the tried and true features that I still adore.
On the outside, the Halo Collar 5 is identical in every way to the 4. At this point, Halo Collar has pretty much nailed it design-wise, so why mess with a great thing, right? Inside (where it counts), though, there are several amazing new upgrades.
1. Even Longer Battery Life
The jump from 30 hours (Halo Collar 4) to 48 hours is huge. That’s two full days of continuous tracking on a single charge. If you’ve ever been frustrated by how often you need to plug in a GPS collar, this update alone makes the upgrade worth it.
2. AlwaysOn™ GPS
While past iterations of the Halo Collar have been pretty solid in terms of helping you find a lost dog very quickly, the Halo Collar 5 is literally always on. Unlike other collars that slip into low-power mode, it keeps tracking nonstop. No compromises, no gaps — just constant real-time location updates.
With the addition of Precision+, that constant tracking is now significantly more accurate—keeping your dog’s location locked in within about 2 feet, even in more challenging environments.
3. Lightning-Fast Location Updates
Anyone who is the proud owner of a sighthound knows how incredibly fast they can run. If they’re on the loose, their location can change in a blink of an eye. Less than that, actually. Like a quarter of a blink of an eye!
The Halo Collar 5 processes 20 location updates per second. To put that in perspective, that’s 20 times faster than some competitors. Translation: when Freya decides to bolt after a chipmunk, the collar doesn’t lag behind — it keeps right up with her.

Speaking of setup, if you already have a Pack Membership for an older model, swapping it out to the Halo Collar 5 is super simple. It took me less than a minute to add the new collar and assign it to Freya. Once I did that, it updated my Membership to reflect that I was using the new collar.
Drawbacks
Of course, no product is perfect (although Halo Collar 5 comes pretty darn close). Here are a few potential downsides:
- Subscription still required: As with the 4, you’ll need a plan to activate and keep using the collar. Honestly, though, you’re not going to find a GPS tracking collar that doesn’t require a subscription.
- Cut-to-fit strap: Once you trim it down, you can’t resize it for another larger dog. I get a little anxious about cutting things like this because I’m always worried I’ll go too far. I usually just end up taping the strap down so that I don’t have to cut the excess off. It’s not the prettiest solution I guess, but it works fine for me.
- Proprietary charger: This isn’t really a drawback to the collar, just one of my pet peeves in general with tech. The charger is magnetic and specifically designed for the Halo Collar, which means if you lose it you’ll need to wait for a replacement.
Bottom Line: Is the Halo Collar 5 Worth It?
If you’re looking for the most advanced GPS dog fence and tracker available today, then yes — the Halo Collar 5 is absolutely worth considering.
