Over the last few years, I’ve also tested out the Halo Collar 3, the original Guardian GPS + Tracking collar, and the Tractive XL model (plus a bunch of collars that aren’t specifically designed for GPS tracking). Mark, the former owner of TechnoBark (and still an occasional writer and consultant) tested out the original Halo Collar, the Halo Collar 2, the original Tractive (plus a whole bunch of other collars that didn’t make our list). So, between us, we’ve been through just about every model of the top picks.

Detailed Overview of Halo Collar 5

As you can see from the features list above, the Halo Collar 5 is so much more than just a wireless dog fence. It’s a comprehensive collar that helps contain, train, monitor, and find your pup. So, if you’re looking for something more comprehensive when it comes to keeping your dog safe, this is it.

Accurate Real-Time Tracking

Unlike most GPS dog fences, the Halo Collar 5 doesn’t rely on just one GPS signal. Instead, it uses dual-frequency GPS combining L1 and L5 GPS bands for accurate tracking. It also relies on signals from over 150 satellites to show your dog’s exact location and connects to up 35 satellites at one time (only 4 are needed to triangulate a location).

By using two different frequency bands, the system can pinpoint your dog’s location much more accurately—even in tricky areas like cities with tall buildings or places with weak signals. This helps reduce errors caused by obstacles or interference. As a result, you get more accurate location details with the Halo Collar 5 GPS Dog Fence than with any other GPS collar. It automatically connects to any cellular network in any location (if you are out of Bluetooth range and not on a WiFi network, the collar will default to an LTE/Cellular connection. If the Halo Collar is connected over LTE, it will update the data and location on the app every second). 

Halo Collar’s technology also includes Wi-Fi signals that are critical in many scenarios, such as when your dog is at home (where cellular reception may be limited). Additionally, Halo Collar’s PrecisionGPS™ AI technology and active antenna let you keep tabs on your pet in any location automatically. This machine learning is also used to differentiate between direct signals and those bouncing off obstacles (like buildings and tree cover). 

Long (and overly techy) story short, it’s REALLY freaking accurate. If you read my review, you know that I live in the woods. I’ve never once had an issue with the Halo Collar 5 failing to accurately track Freya’s location.

Easy Fence Setup

To create a fence in the Halo app, just tap “My Map” in the bottom left corner. Then slide up the “Find & Manage Pets” card and hit “Add Fence.” From there, you can either manually create a fence or use the nifty Create a Fence feature by searching for your address (or dropping a pin on your house) and letting the app create one for you. The app has lots of other cool features, too, like the Whistle feature, which is exactly what it sounds like – encouraging your dog to come back to you when you’re out and about together.

There’s also a nifty new “Walk” feature. Turn it on when you head off on an adventure and it disables all automatic feedback. You can send feedback manually, though.

Upgraded Design Now Fits Most Dogs

Okay, so there are two things that I love about the new Halo Collar 5 design. The first is more practical: Halo Collar is also compatible with a wide range of dogs, with NEW Perfect Fit sizing that fits dogs with neck sizes ranging from 8-30.5″.

The second upgrade is more of a personal preference thing that in no way affects the actual collar: the colors. You have 5 options: Sunburst, Graphite, Orchid, Midnight Blue and the NEW Blaze (aka yellow, grey, pink, blue, and orange).

The colors are so vibrant and gorgeous. I mean, look at that pink (Orchid)! Doesn’t it just pop? I’m not even a girl who uses the word “pop” usually, but it really fits here.

Bottom line, Halo Collar 5’s no dig GPS Wireless dog fence does triple duty, providing customers with a GPS Dog Fence, Cesar Millan’s expertly crafted in-app training program, and detailed statistics on your dog’s activities. 

Drawbacks

As far as drawbacks go, there are a couple of minor ones. The biggest one is that you need a subscription even just to activate this GPS pet tracker. That’s pretty standard these days, though. Plans start at $9.99 a month. The only thing that I don’t like is that you can’t really see the plans ahead of time. You’ll choose a Pack Membership Plan after purchasing the collar.

The only other thing that I don’t like is the fact that you have to cut off the excess strap. There’s really no easy or handy way to tuck it away. It’s a super minor gripe, I know, but I have this “what if I screw it up and cut too short” fear. I ended up just taping the excess strap to itself, though, and it worked just fine.

I’m not including the cost as a drawback anymore because the Halo Collar 5 is priced extremely competitively. While it’s a bit pricier than some, it’s A LOT cheaper than others.

The Guardian GPS 2.0 upgraded its patented AccuGuard™ by combining dual-frequency GPS and even smarter AI. The AI is so advanced that it can even predict your dog’s movements ahead of time.

Simple Fence Setup

Setting up and managing fences is easy using the My PetSafe® app. While you’re limited to manual creation (by dropping “fence posts” around your property on the map), it’s a pretty straightforward process.

I really like that you can toggle the map to show satellite imagery or just the property lines (like below). It’s hard for me to set up fences for my house when using satellite views because of all of the trees surrounding my property.

Smaller and Lighter Design

Along with upgraded tracking features, a longer battery life, and the ability to store more fences, it’s also 50% smaller and lighter than the competition. Perhaps the biggest upgrade, though, is the fact that it now fits 98% of dog breeds (neck sizes 8″ and up).

The collar is also rechargeable (obviously) with a battery life of up to 70 hours depending on how you use it and waterproof, making it perfect for outdoor use in all weather conditions.

Drawbacks

There are a few downsides to consider. Like most GPS dog fences, the collar requires a subscription. At $9.99 a month, though, the price is comparable to other brands.

Another potential drawback is that it’s only suitable for properties that are at least 1/2 acre. It’s also not recommended for areas with dense tree coverage. However, I happen to live in a very woodsy area and haven’t experienced any issues because of it.

Despite these drawbacks, the Guardian® GPS 2.0 Dog Fence + Tracking is a robust and reliable option for those seeking advanced pet tracking and security. Plus, it’s from PetSafe, a brand with a very long reputation for creating quality products, so you know you can trust it.

Detailed Overview of SATELLAI

As with most modern GPS dog collars, SATELLAI lets you ditch wires entirely—but it goes a step further than many of its competitors with some seriously flexible fencing options. You can create and store unlimited virtual fences (yep, unlimited), and that includes nested, overlapping, and even creatively shaped boundaries. So whether you have a weirdly shaped yard, a giant property, or both, SATELLAI can handle it.

Setting Up Fences

Setting up fences is super simple. Open the app, tap into the fencing section, and either drag and drop a premade shape (like a circle) or custom-design your own perimeter. You can even create overlapping fences or entire fences within other fences.

SATELLAI also gives you the ability to extend fencing to indoor problem zones, like the trash can or your cat’s food bowl. Just drop a Beacon where you want to set a “no-go” zone, and the collar gives Fido a warning when he gets too close.

Collar Design

The SATELLAI collar comes in 4 beautiful colors. Freya is wearing the Cobalt Blue. You can also get it in Shocking Pink, Candy Apple Red, and Smoke Gray.

As far as design itself goes, SATELLAI works for dogs with neck sizes from 14″ to 30″, so doesn’t fit quite the wide range of dogs as Halo Collar and PetSafe’s Guardian. Still, that covers a good variety of breeds.

One thing that really stands out with the SATELLAI design is how easy it is to put the collar on or take it off. You can do it with just one hand (while holding your phone in the other!). Ignore the fact that I’m wearing a heavy coat in the pic below. This was taken in the spring, back when we had some blissfully chilly days.

Drawbacks

Like the other collars on this list, SATELLAI requires a subscription to use it. Before they launched there was talk of not requiring one for certain features, but at the moment there’s no way around needing a subscription. Could that change back down the line? Maybe. But for now, I’d count on needing it for the foreseeable future.

You’ll also see a lot of people talking about issues with the app. Keep in mind that the SATELLAI collar is brand-new. Most of those reviews are talking about the first iteration of the app, which admittedly was kind of bonkers at times. But SATELLAI releases new app updates constantly, and as of now, all of the major kinks have been ironed out.

Even with the early kinks, the SATELLAI is impressive enough to earn its #3 spot on our list.

Detailed Overview of SpotOn

SpotOn also does double duty as both a GPS dog fence and a tracking collar.

As far as accuracy goes, SpotOn uses True Location™ GPS technology. A few years ago, they were independently rated the most accurate GPS dog fence. SpotOn’s tech also makes their collars extremely accurate even in heavily wooded or rural areas.

Setting up the Fence

Like the other collars, you can easily set up fences within the app just by drawing them out. However, SpotOn has one pretty unique aspect compared to the others- it also lets you create a fence by walking your property line. I think this is a really nifty feature, especially for those of us who have weird boundaries or just aren’t that great at judging the exact right spots to drop posts on an app map.

Another major plus, along with letting you create and store unlimited fences, SpotOn gives you more options than competitors. For example, along with overlapping fences, you can also create Keep-Out Zones. So, say you want Fido to have full roam of your yard EXCEPT for your garden. You can create your garden as a keep-out zone within the fence for your yard.

You can also create Home Zones where your dog doesn’t trigger corrections. Maybe you have a fenced-in back yard where Fido can roam at will, but a wide-open front yard where you need him contained. Just set your backyard as a Home Zone and draw a fence around the front yard.

Collar Design

Look, I’m not going to lie here. SpotOn’s design is my least favorite out of all of the GPS dog fences. It’s the biggest one I’ve tested so far (even though the new Nova Edition is smaller and sleeker), and it only comes in one color. The color thing doesn’t affect usage, so it’s not a huge deal, but the size can be a factor to consider.

The new Nova Edition also comes in just one size that can be scaled down to fit dogs with 10″ necks or up to 26″ inches.

One thing I REALLY love about their design is that the excess collar strap tucks under the collar instead of dangling over top. So, if you have a growing puppy you don’t have to choose between snipping it too short or leaving excess strap dangling loose. It’s a little thing, I know, but when you’re testing multiple GPS fences that are all pretty stellar, the little things often tip the scales.

It’s hard to tell in the picture above because I didn’t quite line everything up right for that shot, but when you put the collar on your dog the right way the excess strap doesn’t mess with any of the functions.

I also love that SpotOn dog fence collars have 30 levels of static correction. That’s twice as many (or more) as other competitors. I don’t use static correction on my dog, but I know a lot of people do, so having more options is definitely a good thing.

Drawbacks

The biggest drawback to SpotOn is the price tag. At $999, it’s among the most expensive GPS dog fences by quite a bit. The price is offset by the fact that you don’t need a subscription to activate it or use it as a fence. However, if you want to use the virtual fence features, you do need one if you want to track Fido beyond your set boundaries.

So, if you’re ONLY planning to use SpotOn as a virtual dog fence then yeah, the subscription-free thing is pretty awesome. If you do go with a subscription for GPS tracking, the pricing is on par with every other competitor in that respect.

Okay, so Tractive isn’t technically a TRUE GPS dog fence in the way that the others on our list are. But for those who don’t have $400+ to drop on an invisible fence system, it may be the perfect option. Let’s look at why.

Tractive’s tracking feature is seriously impressive when it comes to staying connected. It uses LTE networks from major U.S. carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile to deliver reliable, real-time GPS updates—no matter how far you and your dog are from each other.

Whether your pup is just down the street or you’re checking in from across the globe, Tractive keeps you in the loop. Plus, with coverage in over 175 countries, it’s a solid choice for travelers or anyone who wants dependable tracking without borders.

Fencing Features

Tractive is primarily intended to be a GPS Tracking Collar, so its invisible fence features are fairly limited. In some cases, though, those limited features are really all you need.

For example, say you live in a rural area (or at least far enough from a main road) and allow your dog to wander off-leash. However, you want to make sure he doesn’t wander too far. In that scenario, you could easily create fences in the Tractive app.

You can create both safe and no-go boundaries. If your dog leaves a safe zone or enters a no-go zone, you’ll get an alert through the app. Tractive also allows you to make round, square, or custom-shaped fences, but they can’t overlap.

Tracker Design

I was going to call this section “collar design” like above, but Tractive isn’t actually a collar itself. It’s a device that attaches to just about any collar (it fits dogs over 9 lbs). That’s always been one of my favorite features, and not just because it means Freya can still look stylish while wearing it. Making it so that it attaches to any collar means you don’t have to deal with sizing issues.

The newest model (Dog 6) is the same exact size as the original Tractive. I actually thought it was smaller, though, because it just looks less bulky. It comes in three colors- black, brown, and mint. I have the black.

Drawbacks

The first drawback is the same as every collar on this list (except for the exceptions with SpotOn): you’ll need a subscription to use the collar. Plans start at $5 a month when you pay for 3 years upfront. You can’t pay month-to-month at all, though. You’ll need to pay for at least a year upfront.

The biggest drawback, though, is the fact that Tractive doesn’t actually prevent your dog from leaving the yard. While you’ll get an instant alert, Fido doesn’t receive any feedback when he crosses the boundaries.

That said, don’t count Tractive out when you’re comparing GPS dog fences. If all you need is something to track your dog and alert you to boundary crossings, it’s definitely the most affordable option even with the subscription requirement.
