How to Remove Dog Hair from Clothes (Without Losing Your Mind)
Written by Nicole Etolen

If you share your home with a dog, you’ve probably spent an insane amount of time thinking about how to remove dog hair from clothes. I know I have! As much as I love dogs, I’ve spent decades battling dog hair.

The good news? There are actually some effective ways to remove dog hair from clothes, both before and after laundry day. Let’s start a peek at my 3 must-haves for taming pet hair:

Best Washing Machine Cleaner
Best Vacuum for Removing Pet Hair
Best Groomer with Lint Roller Tool

Uproot Clean’s ultra-advanced formula is crafted to remove tough buildup and stop it from clinging to your washer’s interior. This even includes tiny particles that you might not realize are contaminating your laundry because the naked eye can't see them.

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser DualBrush Upright Vacuum is built for homes where pet hair somehow ends up everywhere. Its DualBrush Technology uses two brush rolls working together to lift embedded dirt, fur, and debris from both carpets and hard floors, while the FurGuard self-cleaning system helps prevent frustrating hair wrap.

The Neakasa S1 Lite 5-in-1 Pet Grooming Vacuum Kit combines grooming, trimming, deshedding, and household cleanup into one surprisingly practical system. It vacuums fur as you groom to help keep hair off your floors and furniture. The included hair remover roller is especially handy for pulling stubborn fur off couches, bedding, and upholstery without the waste and hassle of disposable lint rollers.

How to Remove Dog Hair from Clothes

My current dog, Freya, is a Pharaoh Hound, and while people often assume short-haired dogs don’t shed much, that’s definitely not true. In some ways, I think short hair is even worse because those tiny hairs seem to weave themselves directly into fabric.

Before Freya, I had a German Shepherd/Husky mix who would “blow her coat” every spring. We’d brush her for what felt like hours, remove enough fur to build several entirely new dogs, and somehow she’d still have plenty left to decorate every black shirt I owned. At the same time, I also had a Lab/Collie that was a shedder. So, I can relate to the ongoing battle that is dog hair removal.

Why Dog Hair Seems Impossible to Remove

Dog hair doesn’t simply sit on fabric. Static electricity causes it to cling tightly to clothing. Some hair types also have tiny barbs that help them work their way into fibers. That’s why certain dogs seem to create more laundry frustration than others.

Short-haired breeds often produce stiff hairs that become embedded in fabric, while longer-haired breeds tend to leave visible clumps that are easier to brush away.

Either way, a few simple changes to how you do laundry can go a long way toward getting dog hair off your clothes before it has a chance to become a permanent accessory, so let’s start there.

Laundry Tricks That Actually Work for Removing Dog Hair

If you’ve ever washed a shirt only to discover it somehow came out with even more dog hair attached to it, you’re not imagining things.

The washing machine can sometimes redistribute hair instead of removing it. These techniques help break that cycle.

Start with a Clean Machine

Here’s something many people overlook. If your washing machine is full of dog hair, every load afterward can end up collecting leftover fur.

Over time, pet hair can build up inside the drum, filters, hoses, and other hidden components. Think of it this way: if you’re constantly removing dog hair from your clothes but never removing it from the machine, you’re fighting an uphill battle.

Running a dedicated washing machine cleaner regularly helps keep things working properly. The Uproot Washing Machine Cleaner Pro is my favorite. It’s specifically designed to break down residue and buildup that can trap pet hair and odors inside your machine. Check out my full Uproot Washing Machine Cleaner Pro Review for more details.

Put Your Laundry in the Dryer FIRST

Here’s one that never would have occurred to me until my aunt mentioned it. It really does help a lot more than you’d think!

Instead of starting with the washer:

  1. Put your clothes in the dryer first.
  2. Run a 10-15 minute tumble cycle.
  3. Clean the lint trap.
  4. Then wash normally.

This won’t remove every last bit of fur and floof, but it will significantly cut down on the amount that ends up in your washing machine.

Don’t Overload the Washer

I’m guilty of loading my washing machine to the max on laundry day, but I’m trying to do better. I’ve noticed that on days when I actually do smaller loads the clothes come out with significantly less stuck-on dog hair than on jam-packed days.

It makes sense, though. Clothes need room to move. When the drum is packed full, pet hair has nowhere to go except onto other items in the load.

Use Liquid Fabric Softener

Fabric softener helps reduce static cling, making it easier for hair to separate from fabric fibers. Less static usually means less fur sticking around after the wash.

I like this one by Happy Elephant because it’s more eco-friendly and doesn’t use harsh chemicals. It’s pricier than your average national brand but not terribly expensive overall.

Happy Elephant Natural Biodegradable Liquid Fabric Softener

Just 1–3 oz per load delivers long-lasting softness and freshness. This ultra concentrated fabric softener is made with Soforo, a patented bio-surfactant that softens without synthetic additives. Free from synthetic dyes and harsh chemicals, this liquid fabric conditioner is formulated with biodegradable ingredients, making it a safe choice for sensitive skin and everyday laundry use.

Add an Extra Rinse Cycle

I saved this tip for last because not everyone has a well system like I do and water can be pricey in some areas (or sparse in drought-prone areas). Still, an extra rinse can really help flush away lingering hair that may still be trapped in fabrics after washing.

Dryer Sheets vs Wool Balls: Which is Better for Pet Hair Removal

While we’re on the topic of laundry tricks, let’s settle this debate that comes up a lot. Which one works better for removing pet hair?

In my experience, it’s definitely dryer sheets. They are designed to reduce static, which in turn helps loosen pet hair. So, for hair removal alone, they’re often the more effective option. You don’t HAVE to go with something made specifically for pet hair, but if you do I’d go with these by Uproot Clean.

Uproot Clean Dryer Sheets Pet Hair Reducing (50 Pcs) Summer Wisteria Scent

With 50 clean dryer sheets pet hair cling is a thing of the past! At 3x the size of regular dryer sheets for pet hair, you get more dog hair dryer sheet protection in every pack!

That said, wool dryer balls are reusable and don’t contain fragrances or additives. They can also help separate your clothes better in the dryer. If you’re a chronic over-stuffer like me, that can actually help loosen dog fur. Dryer sheets still work better overall though in my experience.

If you decide to go with wool balls, I like these on Chewy:

Fido Fave Reusable Dryer Balls for Dog Hair Removal

These 100% New Zealand wool dryer balls are a natural and reusable solution. Made with long and curly wool fibers sourced directly from New Zealand, these dryer balls are designed to effectively lift and trap loose pet hair without the use of chemicals, fragrances, or lint buildup.

Quick Fur-Removal Fixes When You’re Already Running Late

We’ve all done it. You’re fully dressed, ready to leave, and decide to give your dog one last goodbye hug. Thirty seconds later, you look down and realize your outfit is now 30% dog. When you don’t have time to change clothes, these solutions can help.

Stash Lint Rollers EVERYWHERE

The classic lint roller remains one of the fastest solutions for visible dog hair.

Keep one:

  • By the front door
  • In your car
  • At your desk
  • In your travel bag

If you’re constantly fighting pet hair, you’ll probably find yourself reaching for it more often than you’d like. They’re super cheap so it’s easier to keep them where you know you’ll need them.

Use a Slightly Damp Rubber Glove

A simple rubber cleaning glove can work surprisingly well.

Lightly dampen it and run your hand across your clothing. The rubber creates friction that lifts hair from fabric and gathers it into easy-to-remove clumps.

Try a High-Tech Hair Removal Tool

Traditional lint rollers work, but reusable pet hair tools can be even more effective.

One of my favorite unexpected features of the Neakasa S1 Lite 5-in-1 Pet Grooming Vacuum Kit is the included hair removal roller. Think of it as a more advanced lint brush that doesn’t rely on disposable sticky sheets. It’s particularly helpful on heavier fabrics where dog hair likes to dig in and refuse to leave.

Duct Tape in a Pinch

No lint roller available? Wrap duct tape (packing tape also works) around your hand with the sticky side facing out and pat the affected areas.

It may not be the most elegant solution, but I’ve done this more times than I can count and it always works. Not flawlessly, but it leaves my clothes at least 80% less furry. 😀

Keep Your Furniture & Floors Clean

Sometimes the problem isn’t your dog. It’s your couch. Or your wall-to-wall carpet. Or the blanket your dog claimed six years ago and never gave back.

The less hair sitting on household surfaces, the less there is to end up on your clothes. Makes sense, right?

Vacuum More Frequently

A quality vacuum designed for pet hair can dramatically reduce the amount of fur circulating throughout your home.

Focus on:

  • Upholstery
  • Curtains
  • Rugs
  • Dog beds
  • Car interiors

We’ve had a lot of vacuums over the years. Right now, my favorite is this one by Bissell. Check out my full Bissell Pet Hair Eraser DualBrush review to see how it performs in a very hair house.

Consider an Air Purifier Designed for Pets

Many people think of air purifiers only for allergies.

They’re also incredibly helpful for reducing airborne fur and dander.

Pet-specific models like the Oneisall for Pets air purifier can capture floating hair before it settles onto furniture, clothing, and other surfaces.

No purifier will completely eliminate shedding, but reducing the amount of fur floating around your home can make a noticeable difference.

Oneisall Air Purifier for Homes with Pets

The OneisAll Double-Sided Air Purifier captures pet hair, dander, and odors from both sides, keeping your home’s air cleaner and fresher with far less effort.

The Best Way to Remove Dog Hair from Clothes: Stop It Before It Starts

The easiest dog hair to remove is the hair that never reaches your clothes in the first place.

Stay on Top of Grooming

Regular brushing removes loose fur before it can fall onto every surface in your home.

During seasonal shedding periods, increasing brushing frequency can make a huge difference.

I learned this firsthand with my German Shepherd/Husky mix. Missing even a few days during shedding season felt like inviting a fur tornado into the house.

Use a Grooming Vacuum

Traditional brushing works, but grooming vacuums can make the process significantly easier.

Systems like the Neakasa S1 Lite 5-in-1 Pet Grooming Vacuum Kit collect loose hair as you brush, preventing it from immediately floating back into your home.

Instead of removing a pile of fur from your dog only to watch it drift across the room, the vacuum captures it at the source. Plus, it comes with a handy-dandy fur remover tool designed specifically for your clothes and furniture. Think high-tech lint roller.

Neakasa S1 Lite 5-in-1 Pet Grooming Vacuum Kit

The Neakasa S1 Lite 5-in-1 Pet Grooming Vacuum Kit combines grooming, trimming, deshedding, and household cleanup into one surprisingly practical system. It vacuums fur as you groom to help keep hair off your floors and furniture, while the quiet one-click suction system makes the experience less stressful for pets. The included hair remover roller is especially handy for pulling stubborn fur off couches, bedding, and upholstery without the waste and hassle of disposable lint rollers.

Wash Dog Bedding Regularly

Dog beds can become giant reservoirs of loose fur.

Washing them frequently helps reduce the amount of hair circulating through your home.

Designate Dog Blankets

Giving your dog specific blankets or furniture covers helps contain fur to areas that are easier to clean.

This won’t eliminate shedding, but it can reduce how much hair migrates to your clothes.

Can Diet Affect Shedding?

Sometimes. A healthy coat starts from the inside.

Dogs that receive balanced nutrition often maintain healthier skin and coats, which may help reduce excessive shedding caused by nutritional deficiencies.

That doesn’t mean a food change will suddenly stop normal shedding, especially during seasonal coat changes.

However, if your dog’s coat seems dull, brittle, or unusually thin, discussing nutrition with your veterinarian may be worthwhile.

When Shedding Might Be a Health Issue

All dogs shed. Sudden or excessive shedding is different. If your dog is losing significantly more hair than usual, talk with your veterinarian.

Potential causes can include:

  • Allergies
  • Skin infections
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Stress
  • Parasites
  • Underlying illness

This is also where health-monitoring technology can be useful.

The PetPace Smart Collar tracks physiological metrics including activity levels, resting behaviors, respiration trends, and other health indicators. While it won’t diagnose the cause of shedding, it can provide additional data that may help identify changes in your dog’s overall well-being that warrant a closer look.

When shedding suddenly increases alongside other changes in behavior or health, it’s always worth investigating.

PetPace Smart Collar 3.0

The PetPace Smart Collar is a high-tech health tracker for dogs that monitors vital signs, activity, stress, and sleep—all in real time. Designed for comfort and built with vet-grade technology, it syncs with an easy-to-use app to give pet parents peace of mind and early alerts for potential health issues. Ideal for senior dogs or pets with medical conditions, it’s a powerful tool for proactive care in a sleek, wearable design.

Final Thoughts

Living with dogs means accepting a certain amount of fur in your life. That’s just part of the deal.

But there’s a big difference between occasionally finding dog hair on your clothes and feeling like you’re wearing an entire second dog every time you leave the house.

A combination of quick hair-removal tools, smarter laundry habits, regular grooming, and a few well-chosen pet-tech solutions can dramatically reduce the problem.

And if all else fails? Keep a lint roller by the front door. Trust me on that one.
