Top 5 Best Electric Dog Nail Clippers & Grinders

Two quick notes. First,  technically, electric dog nail clippers ARE grinders. So, if you’re picturing traditional nail cutters, but just with a cord (or a battery), you won’t find that below.

Second, if you checked out this list before, you may have noticed that we trimmed a few products off (it was originally the 8 best grinders). Some of the products originally featured are either no longer available or just aren’t that great anymore. I stuck with options that cover a wide range of needs (and breeds!).

1.Dremel PawControl Dog Nail Grinder and Trimmer

The Dremel was the first dog nail grinder that I ever used and it remains one of my favorites. Well, favorites may not be the right word here, as trimming my dog’s nails is a nightmare even with a good grinder. I literally have the scars to prove it! But it definitely makes the job a little easier.

Features and Specs

  • Comes with a 760 4V Li-on cordless pet nail groomer, 9 piece accessories, USB charging cable and power adaptor, user manual, quick start guide, 2 year card; 5V power adaptor
  • Nail guard prevents accidental mishaps and reduces the risk of trimming your dog’s nails too short.
  • 4 adjustable speeds

What Makes It Different?

The Dremel PawControl kit is easy enough for novices to use yet advanced enough for professional groomers. It also works with a myriad of other Dremel attachments.

What We Like

  • It comes with quite a few attachments. While you probably won’t use all of them, it’s still nice to have options.
  • Variable speeds. You can set it on a higher speed in the beginning, then slow it down as you get closer to the quick.
  • Lightweight and portable, so it’s easy to take with you on the go.

What We Don’t Like

  • Takes almost 3 hours to fully charge
  • Short battery life
  • It’s a bit on the noisy side compared to other grinders

It’s worth noting that some Amazon reviewers said the exact opposite in regards to battery life. So it’s entirely possible that my battery is just a lemon. It works long enough for me to do my dog’s nails, though.

Where to Buy It

The Dremel PawControl Dog Nail Grinder kit is currently available on both Amazon and Chewy

Dremel PawControl Dog Nail Grinder and Trimmer
$89.90

Help keep your pet’s nails trimmed in the comfort of your own home with the Dremel 7760-PGK 4V Pet Grooming Cordless Kit. This cordless, ergonomic design gradually trims nails at a 45-degree angle in a controlled manner, reducing your changes of cutting the nail quick. When grooming with other tools like clippers and scissors, you have a greater chance of cutting the quick which can result in pain. This tool has a clear cap on the nail guard to capture nail dust and fur.

2. Casfuy Dog Nail Grinder

The Casfuy Grinder is one of the most highly-rated electric dog nail clippers on Amazon, with a 4.5-star rating across over 88K reviews. With a price point just under $20 (literally JUST under), it’s a safe pick for those who don’t really need a whole paw-care kit.

Features and Specs

  • Diamond drum bit grinder
  • 2-Speed Switch
  • 3 Grinding Ports
  • Relatively low-noise (under 50 decibels)
  • Rechargeable battery

What Makes It Different?

As far as dog nail grinders go, Casfuy is by far one of the quietest overall. Is it silent? No. But honestly, you’re not going to find a totally silent nail grinder. Heck, even if you go with one that isn’t electric (which I DO NOT recommend, they’re a massive pain to use), it’ll still make some noise.

What We Like

  • For a highly rated grinder, it’s very affordable
  • Great design, especially since the nail guard doesn’t get in the way.
  • Super portable and lightweight

What We Don’t Like

  • Doesn’t come with a power adapter, just the USB cable
  • Only 2 speeds
  • Some reviewers say that it’s not ideal for small dogs

Where to Buy It

Available on both Amazon and Chewy for the same price. However, it’s Prime-eligible on Amazon, whereas on Chewy you’ll need to spend at least $30 more to get free shipping.

Casfuy Dog Nail Grinder (Upgraded Model)
$19.97

Keep your paw-tner’s nails neat and trim with Casfuy’s Rechargeable Small Dog & Cat Nail Grinder. Specially designed for small and medium sized pets, the fine grinding wheel is super powerful and has a protective sleeve to prevent accidental injury. The nail grinder is small and rechargeable, so it stores and travels easily, plus the classic black and white design is timeless. Best of all, it’s really quiet and the vibration level is gentle—giving your su-paw-model a mani-pedi just became an easy, pleasant experience!

3. PATPET 2 LED Quiet Medium & Large Dog & Cat Nail Grinder

If you’re looking for a dog nail grinder that also works well on your cat, the Patpet is a good way to go. While it’s a bit pricier than the Casfuy, it has one notable standout feature that earned it a spot on this list.

Features and Specs

  • Diamond-bit grinder
  • LED lights (to help prevent accidents)
  • 2 adjustable speeds
  • 4.8 V motor
  • Quiet vibration

What Makes It Different?

The 2 LED lights make PatPet stand out, in my opinion. I haven’t seen many other electric dog nail clippers with that feature. It really is a nice touch, especially when you live in a dark house with cruddy lighting like I do.

What We Like

  • As mentioned above, the LED lights
  • Works on cats as well as dogs
  • Lightweight and portable

What We Don’t Like

  • No nail guard
  • It’s kind of on the noisy side

Where to Buy It

Grab the PatPet on Chewy (it’s not currently on Amazon)

4. Bonve Pet Dog Nail Grinder

If you want something for both cats and dogs but don’t really want to spend $30, the Bonve may be a better way to go. It’s one of the few dog nail grinders under $20 that, in my opinion, competes pretty well with Dremel in terms of features.

Features and Specs

  • Diamond-bit grinding wheel
  • 2-speed switch (7000-8000RPM)
  • 3 grinding ports
  • Noise level under 50db
  • USB charger

What Makes It Different?

The upgraded design features a quieter motor than previous Bonve models. While it’s not whisper-quiet, it is among the quieter options overall.

What We Like

  • Relatively quiet motor
  • Grinding ports make it easy to use on dogs of all sizes
  • Super affordable at under $20

What We Don’t Like

  • Short battery life (make sure you charge it before each use)
  • While the design makes it ideal for all dog sizes, the grinder itself isn’t that great on XL breeds

Where to Buy It

The Bonve is available on Amazon and eligible for Prime shipping.

What We Like

  • Corded design means you never have to wait for it to charge
  • The ergonomic finger grips make it comfortable to use
  • Relatively price for a professional-grade grinder
  • It’s pretty quiet for such a powerful device

What We Don’t Like

  • Corded design means it’s not very portable
  • Horrible instructions
  • Some customers complain that it doesn’t last long*

*Roughly 12% of reviewers on Amazon felt that the WAHL dog nail grinder didn’t last nearly as long as it should have. If not for that, WAHL would have been my #2 pick.

Where to Buy It

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Electric Dog Nail Grinders, Trimmers, & Clippers

Now that we’ve covered the top electric nail clippers for dogs, let’s go over some of the pros and cons to going with something electrical (versus good old manual clippers) in the first place.

Advantages of Electric Dog Nail Grinders

  1. Precision and Control: Electric nail grinders offer unparalleled precision when it comes to shaping and smoothing your dog’s nails. You can gradually grind down the nail, reducing the risk of cutting too close to the quick.
  2. Smooth Finish: Grinders often leave a smoother finish compared to traditional clippers, minimizing the chances of splintering or sharp edges that could scratch you or your pet.
  3. Less Stress: Many dogs find the low-vibration, low-noise operation of electric nail grinders less intimidating than the sudden pressure of clippers. This can lead to a more relaxed and cooperative nail trimming session.
  4. Suitable for Large Nails: Electric grinders are often preferred for larger dogs with thicker nails, as they can effectively and efficiently tackle even tough nails.
  5. Reduced Risk of Accidents: Electric grinders can be a safer option for those who are less experienced with nail trimming, as they are less likely to cause accidental injury when used correctly.

Disadvantages of Electric Dog Nail Grinders

  1.  Noise and Vibration: While some dogs tolerate the noise and vibration of electric grinders, others may be frightened or anxious during the process. It may take time and patience to acclimate your dog to this tool.
  2. Learning Curve: Using an electric grinder effectively can require a learning curve, as it’s essential to avoid grinding too quickly or for too long to prevent overheating the nail.
  3.  Price: Good quality electric grinders can be more expensive than traditional clippers, which may be a consideration for budget-conscious pet owners.
  4.  Maintenance: Electric grinders need regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure they function correctly. This can add to the overall cost and time investment.

Advantages of Traditional Dog Nail Clippers

  1.  Simplicity: Clippers are straightforward to use, making them a popular choice for beginners or those who prefer a quick nail trimming process.
  2. Affordability: Traditional clippers are often more budget-friendly than electric grinders, making them accessible to a wide range of pet owners.
  3. Portability: Clippers are compact and easy to transport, making them a convenient choice for on-the-go nail maintenance.

Disadvantages of Traditional Dog Nail Clippers

  1. Risk of Overcutting: There’s a higher risk of accidentally cutting the quick when using traditional clippers, which can be painful for your dog and may result in bleeding.
  2. Splintering: Clippers can sometimes cause nails to splinter or leave sharp edges, which may require additional filing or smoothing.
  3.  Limited to Smaller Dogs: Traditional clippers may not be as effective for larger dogs with thicker nails, as they can struggle to make clean cuts.

Final Thoughts & Recommendation

When it comes to electric dog nail grinders, the best option for you depends almost entirely on your dog. The Dremel is my personal favorite, but if you want something a bit cheaper (and quieter), Casfuy is a great way to go, too.
