Citronella bark collars are one of the most humane solutions to help with your dog’s excessive barking in 2023. There are many controversies about e-collars.  I bet you are against them because you are reading this article.

Being an experienced dog breeder, training the barking problem is my second nature, and citronella spray collars are effective.

I have tested a few citronella bark collars, and they all about the same. We made our list based on factors such as sensor/detection ability, battery, ability to use remote control, and spray capacity.

But before going to the best citronella spray collars that are available in the market right now, let us first know what are these collars and what do they do. Click here to skip straight to the list of the best citronella spray collars in 2023.

What is a Citronella Dog Bark Collar and How it Works?

Citronella collar spraying action while dog barks

A citronella dog collar is a device that is used to train a dog’s barking problem. It is a type of collar that sprays a substance composing citronella on your dog’s face, mildly irritating the dog’s nose. This spray action happens whenever the device senses that the dog is barking. The extract in the bark collar with a citronella spray has a smelling agent that is offensive or unpleasant for dogs. The main idea of the bark control collar is for the dog to control its behavioral problem which is excessive barking. The goal is for the dog to recognize that when it barks, it will get sprayed and hoping later on that it will lessen the unnecessary barking.

This bark collar with citronella spray is also used for both small and large dogs. A lot of pet owners consider this collar more humane than the electric shock anti-bark dog collar. However, you should check if your dog is allergic to citronella before giving them the anti-bark collar. If you still did not get how it works, check this short video of how citronella bark collars work in action:

Things to Consider When Looking for a Citronella Dog Bark Collar

Now that you have known what is a citronella dog bark collar and how it works, the next thing you need to do is identify the things that must be considered when buying this anti-bark collar for your dog.

Sensor/Detection Ability

Adjusting sensor sensability on citronella dog collar

TSWTECH Pet Citronella Spray Bark Collar

One of the possible downsides of using this collar is that that the dog can be punished unfairly because the sensor in the citronella spray bark control collar is not calibrated properly. You should buy a collar that can distinguish the uniqueness of your dog’s bark and won’t trigger other noises. PetSpy T500 spray collar sensor perfectly works, scroll down to read my feedback. There are also some models when you can adjust spray sensitivities like on the collar above.

You should consider buying a citronella dog bark collar with rechargeable batteries if you are not okay with changing its battery now and then. The battery life depends on how long and how often you use the collar on your pet dog. Others have also a low battery indicator included so that the dog owners will know when it is time to charge it.

Remote Controlled or Not?

Using a remote control for citronella collar

WWVVPET Spray Bark Collar With Remote Control

These collars for dogs come in two options: a remote-controlled option where you can manually press a button on your remote for the collar to spray on your dog and the automatic one. Before you buy a citronella-based collar, you must decide which option is best for you and your dog. Both can be beneficial and both have a downside. If you will go for a remote-controlled collar, you can’t use it while you are away and out of range of the remote’s signal range because it won’t spray anything on your dog as you can’t use your remote. While using an automatic one can be problematic if the collar’s sensor is extra sensitive, it means it will spray on your dog once the sensor picks up any noise even if your dog isn’t barking. I personally prefer the ones with a remote.

Spray Capacity

You must check and compare the spray capacity of different collars before buying. Most of these products that you can find in the market today come with an extra spray canister. You must check how many sprays does the collar has and how many refills the extra canister can give. This is why I especially love WWVVPET citronella collar.

Now we will do some reviews and talk about the best citronella bark collars that are available in the market right now.

One amazing feature that this spray collar offers is its bark detection system. This collar also comes with a refill that has 400 to 500 sprays per canister and every refill within the collar is often 30 to 40 sprays. The customers liked it that the collar is easy to adjust, the spray portion is not heavy, and that the battery has a long life span. They also included that it is a godsend, made their dogs less agitated, and had improved their dog’s wild barking in just a matter of days. • Outdated info. I cannot find the refill can in my area. No one sells it anymore forcing people to buy the collar that uses cartridges. Now the old collars are obsolete and will contribute to the landfill problem. Again greed before ethics.
