Which Dog Grooming Supplies Do I Need?

The kind of supplies you need depends on your dog’s coat type. Of course, every dog is different, so you should ask your vet for tailored advice, but we’ve outlined the general rules of thumb for different coats below.

Short & smooth coats

Dogs with thin or short, smooth coats, like Labradors, usually need to be brushed once per week with a pin or bristle brush. They don’t need super regular baths; once every few months should suffice, or whenever they get dirty. Don’t forget a good natural dog shampoo!

Medium & textured coats

Dogs with longer and/or more textured coats, like Cocker Spaniels, should be brushed 2-3 times per week with a pin or slicker brush to keep their coats in good condition. You may also want to invest in a deshedding tool for shedding seasons, and like smooth-coated dogs, they need a bath every few months or whenever they get dirty.

Long & curly coats

Breeds with very long coats or tight curls, like Afghan Hounds or Poodles, should be brushed every day with a de-shedding rake or slicker brush to prevent mats. They also need baths every 4-8 weeks, ideally with a coat-specific shampoo, as they trap dirt much more easily, and haircuts every 6-8 weeks to further prevent matting.

Scissors vs clippers

When it comes to at-home haircuts, you can use scissors or clippers. Most owners prefer to use clippers to get the job done faster, but others like scissors for precision and sensitivity, and many use a combination of both.

There are also different types of scissors; straight scissors are best for basic trims, whilst thinning shears are good for bulk grooming thick coats, as well as blending and adding texture, and curved shears are best for fine-tuning and shaping difficult areas.

If you’d rather use clippers, the main thing you need to know is rpm, or revolutions per minute, which indicates the motor’s power/speed. Adjustable blades and customizable guards also allow you to accommodate different areas of the coat.

What To Consider When Buying Dog Grooming Supplies

When shopping for your kit or supplies, you should also keep the following things in mind:

  • Size proportionate to your dog
  • Weight capacity if applicable
  • Lightweight and/or cordless tools for easy set-up and maneuvering
  • Durable materials like stainless steel
  • Safety features like ball-tipped scissors and non-slip tubs
  • Ergonomic grip for comfortable use
  • Low noise tools for sensitive ears
  • Tools that are easy to clean in between uses
  • Compactness for storage
  • Portability for travel, professional grooming, and dog shows

FAQs

Why do some dogs need more grooming than others?

As mentioned above, certain breeds, like Poodles, need more grooming than others, because of their coat types. Longer and heavily textured coats mat and trap dirt more easily than shorter, smoother coats, which can lead to bad hygiene, bad smells, discomfort, pain, and even skin infections without regular grooming.

At what age should you start grooming a dog?

When you get a puppy, you should aim to start grooming them early to get them used to it, especially if it’s going to become a regular part of their routine, but it’s important not to overwhelm them. Start with some light grooming sessions at 8-10 weeks old.

How to groom an anxious dog?

If your dog hates being groomed or won’t let you do it, try making positive associations with it. Introduce them to the brush, tub, or scissors, and reward them just for being around it. Groom a small section of fur within their eye line and gradually build up to bigger sections.

Take it slow, take breaks if necessary, and reward them as you go to make it a positive experience. If it’s still proving difficult, consider alternative products, like brush gloves or dry dog shampoo. You can also try letting them see a close doggie friend get groomed in front of them to show them it’s nothing to worry about.
